Rock is what most Apache Junction yards want to be. It takes the sun, it asks for no water, and on a parcel this size it is the only surface that makes sense across the whole property. Done right, though, it is not gravel tipped onto dirt. The ground gets cleared and graded first, borders get set so the rock stays where it was put instead of migrating into the driveway, and the planting goes in on drip before the surface goes down. We lay rock in the size and color the yard calls for, set boulders and edging, cut dry-wash lines where the water already wants to run, and plant agave, ocotillo, lantana and desert trees so the yard reads as designed instead of just empty.
The reason prep matters more here than in town is that the desert is already seeded. Rock spread over untouched ground on a lot at the edge of the Superstitions is green again after the first monsoon, because everything that wanted to grow there is still under it waiting for water.
