Rock & Desert Design in Mesa, AZ

Desert yards laid out in rock, borders and low-water planting — in Mesa and all around it.

Almost every rock job starts as a water bill. A front lawn in the East Valley drinks all summer to look average, and at some point the owner decides that a yard which only needs water at a handful of plants makes more sense than one that needs it everywhere at once. Take the grass out, and the summer bill stops being a monthly argument.

A rock yard done properly is not a blank field of gravel, though. It is beds with an edge to them, plants placed where they will look right at full size, and drip going only to the things that are alive. Primos Landscaping lays it out that way in Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, Tempe, Apache Junction and around the rest of the East Valley.

What's included

The part that decides whether a conversion holds up is what happens to the old bermuda. Rock poured over living grass does not smother it; runners find the gaps and come up through the gravel a season later, and pulling them out of loose rock is worse than pulling them out of a lawn. So the grass gets killed off or stripped along with its root layer, and only then does anything go on top. Rock depth matters more than people expect — spread too thin and the dirt shows through and grows weeds in it, spread too deep and it moves under your shoes. Size and color are usually the two decisions the homeowner makes, and in a Gilbert or Chandler HOA neighborhood that choice is frequently narrowed to an approved palette, which is worth confirming before a truck delivers ten tons of something the letter says has to come back out. Borders — block, steel edging, or a poured concrete curb — are what keep rock in the bed and out of the sidewalk and the pool filter. Plants get spaced for their grown size rather than how they look in the pot: lantana, sage, red bird of paradise, desert spoon, agave, an ocotillo where a vertical accent is wanted. And the sprinklers that used to feed the lawn get capped or converted, because a rock yard with live sprinkler heads under it is just a slower way of losing the same water.

How we work

Walk the yard and pick the rock

Size, color and where the beds fall get decided with you, along with anything the HOA restricts.

Grass and roots come out

The lawn and its root layer are removed and hauled, because rock laid over living bermuda comes back through it.

Borders, then irrigation

Edging goes in to hold the beds, old sprinkler heads get capped, and drip is run to each plant location.

Plant and spread

Plants go in at their spacing, rock is spread to an even depth around them, and the drive and walks get blown clean.

Rock & Desert Design by city

The East Valley is not one yard — a 1970s Mesa lot on old flood irrigation, a Gilbert build from 2005 and a San Tan Valley lot on raw desert are three different jobs.

Common questions

Will weeds still come up through the rock?
Some will — seed blows in from above and lands on top no matter what is underneath. Removing the old root layer and keeping the rock at an even depth is what keeps it to a few instead of a field.
Does my HOA have to approve the rock first?
In a lot of Gilbert and Chandler neighborhoods, yes — color, size and sometimes plant counts are spelled out. It is worth checking before rock is ordered rather than after it is spread.
Can I keep some grass and put rock in the rest?
Yes, and it is common — a back yard lawn kept for kids or dogs with the front converted to rock. The irrigation gets split so the two are not watered on the same schedule.
