Grass is the exception here, not the rule. The yards where it works are the ones where somebody actually uses it — a play area behind the house, a strip of green off the patio — not an acre of lawn spread across a desert parcel. When sod does go in, the ground under it decides whether it lives. We strip what is there, break up the compacted layer, grade so water runs away from the house instead of standing at the slab, amend the soil, then lay the sod tight and rolled so the seams knit together rather than drying open. Watering goes in first and gets its own zone, because a lawn running on the same schedule as a rock bed is a lawn that browns out in July.
Sun exposure decides a lot out here. An open parcel with nothing between it and the afternoon sun coming off the foothills asks more of a lawn than a shaded city yard does, and sod laid in the wrong stretch of the year on that ground simply does not take. Where the spot is wrong we say so before laying anything.
